Two things have always really surprised me. The first is how naive people can be. And the second is the insolent impudence of some individuals of the human race. And this story is just about naivety and impudence. I have a grandmother I know. She lives in the city, but not in an apartment, but in a private house. Local pensioners-entrepreneurs, who lived in the private sector, in addition to a large house, had various outhouses and outbuildings, which were quite profitable to rent.
And a friend of mine, Melissa, had a two-story tent for tenants. I often helped her to find tenants. And then one day she called me and said, “Well, here’s the thing, I found tenants myself, a married couple, and I let them stay with me. So I’m all booked up and there’s no need to send new tenants…”.
Well, you don’t have to, so don’t have to. But just a week later she called me back in tears. As it turned out, the tenants she took on the recommendation of someone from the neighborhood. The family was from the region. They say they just came to get a job and they didn’t have anything with them: no food, no pots and pans, no clothes, and they also didn’t have any money. It is not clear how they were going to get a job…
But they promised to get a job within a week and they would pay two months’ rent in advance. Melissa felt sorry for them and let them in the house on those terms. She also gave them bedding and dishes with food, so they would have something to eat for a week. I think I was beginning to understand what these “lodgers” were. Such a free housing scheme was not uncommon.
They assured the pensioner that in a week their cousin from the village would come and bring them things and money. Melissa went on with her story. So, the next day this so-called “wife” got a job as a sales clerk and promised to pay her rent and groceries from the first advance.
And after a couple of days, the “husband” seemed to go to his brother to get his things. That’s how things were. Melissa listened to these stories for another three days. And her lodger did not forget to take her groceries. But a week later she disappeared without a trace. Melissa tried to call them, but their numbers were turned off. It was only later the pensioner finally realized that she had been cheated. They just lived with her for a week for free, and even managed to eat at her expense.
And for some reason many people believe that all the owners are all evil and crooked, and only dream of how to rip off poor tenants. It is a pity for the old lady, she paid for her naivety and spiritual kindness. This is a story of blatant impudence and naive credulity.
