Usually surrogate parents are present at the birth and take their babies in their arms – but here it is not clear. Max and Rebecca had a long time to choose first the IVF clinic, then the surrogate mother, and then our maternity hospital. The surrogate mother was admitted to the maternity hospital early on; a cesarean section was planned, as the babies – and there were two of them – were not laid properly.
The surrogate mother was very nervous before the cesarean – not for herself, but for the babies. The surgery was a success and two healthy girls were born. But for some reason they didn’t manage to get through to the biological parents – neither in the morning, nor after the surgery.
Max came to the maternity hospital only the next day – and immediately went to the office of the head doctor. They talked about something and the new father left without even asking about the children – which surprised us greatly. Usually surrogate parents are present at the births and take their babies in their arms – but here we didn’t understand.
But when the manager came out and said to transfer the twins to the ward for abandoned babies, everything became clear. It turned out that the biological parents simply changed their mind to take their children – they argued and filed for divorce. And the children turned out to be of no use to either their father or their mother.
Strictly speaking, until certain documents were signed, they were not the parents of these girls, so they didn’t even have to write a refusal. But the surrogate mother had to do it. After listening to her, she silently turned around and left the office. The woman sat silently in her room for over two hours and then got up and went to the children’s ward. She went to her children.
We discharged the babies as we should have – on the fifth day after their birth. The girls with their mother were taken away by their father. The parents were not at all embarrassed by the fact that the children had someone else’s genetic code.
