Max seemed even to his close friends to be a frivolous and irresponsible man, too frivolous to be trusted with anything without fear of consequences. In a purely male circle of friends, we were sure that he would still go out and go out, but he was suddenly the first of us all to get married. His wife was very nice, took care of Max a lot, did everything for him. There were times when he was out of work for a long time, but she didn’t bother him with it, pulling it all out on her salary and spoiling him the way I think a man should spoil a woman – dinners in restaurants, expensive and interesting dates and weekend trips to nearby cities for walks. I already knew then that things had gotten more serious between them, but I didn’t realize how much until his wife caught up with them. She worked a lot at the end of each quarter and came home late. Max
took advantage of it, so he’d go to his mistress and she’d go to his. They would stroll through neighborhoods that Max knew well, where he also strolled with his wife, and one of the neighbors recognized him. She told her wife that her husband was walking around with a girl, taking her home.
The woman had clearly deliberately asked to leave work early, but she didn’t tell Max. She thought about catching them at home, but ran into them at the supermarket.
Max says he’s never seen her so angry in his life. She poured a bag of milk on him, threw eggs at his mistress, and then left, making them pay for the mess. By the time Max
returned home, there were several suitcases waiting for him. She refused to listen to his explanations and didn’t cool down even after a week, no matter how many times he knocked on her door. So now Max is temporarily living in a hostel and hopes that the court will force them to divide the apartment, thanks to which he will have some money for a place of his own.
And I don’t think he got enough. He hasn’t learned anything, and he’s not afraid of losing his wife at all. He’s having fun that she caught them and made a circus in the supermarket.
