I had a contract with a company for two and a half years, so I was literally trapped in Finland without being able to leave for a long time. My wife refused to move with me because she had her own favorite job at home and a sick mother whom she wanted to take care of. She herself came to see me at least twice a year, at New Year’s and in late spring when she took a vacation. She behaved as usual, saying she missed me very much and begged me not to renew her contract further because she was waiting for me to come home. The last winter she wasn’t so eager to call me home, but I thought that was because she knew I was coming. I didn’t give her the exact numbers, I wanted it to be a surprise.
I got home to her and my mother-in-law, and she was stunned by my appearance. She was confused, blushed, then turned pale.
– What do you mean? I’m going home, the three of us will now live together.
The woman sat on a chair in the kitchen, incomprehensibly looking at me.
– How can it be? “Monica has a new husband,” she said.
– How so? What husband?
– They are six months, as together live here. Her colleague. She started seeing them after the last trip to see you, – my mother-in-law told me. – She said you had someone else too, and you decided to get a divorce. The papers were signed a long time ago… And she’s expecting a baby.
This was the most unpleasant and unexpected news I could have heard. I did not meet anyone in Finland, and I did not give my wife a single reason to believe that I was cheating or did not love her, and she found someone else, who was near me, and divorced me through the court. She and her new husband were going to have a child, and I had nowhere to go back to…
My mother-in-law supported me as a human being and offered to vacate the old apartment that she was renting, but I refused. I temporarily stayed with my father and his new family, and I am trying to get a transfer to a branch abroad again. My wife doesn’t even know I’m here, she doesn’t call or write, she lives happily ever after. And I don’t want her to know. It hurts my pride. When I find someone abroad, then I’ll tell her, so that she knows what it’s like.
