Alice and Adam have been dating for two years. They have been living together for a few months and moved into my mom’s apartment. There was a thought of selling it or renting it out, but my son quickly started to develop a relationship, and my wife and I decided to give the apartment to them. It is a regular two-bedroom apartment, on the first floor. Renovations have been done there for a long time, it is desirable to update. Nowadays the young people want everything in the European style, with white walls, expensive floors, and chandeliers without any frills. That is why we expected that right after moving Adam would start the repairs, but he keeps putting them off.
My wife encouraged me to find out from him why they were in such a hurry, and he said it was because of Alice. They both live in an apartment, they pay rent and internet equally, and there are urgent repairs to the plumbing or something else, but she doesn’t want to invest in wallpaper, laminate flooring and other things. Since they’re only dating and not married, she’s afraid to invest her money in a place she might not get.
What kind of consumerist attitude is that? She rushes her son to marry her, lives on everything ready-made and does not even want to invest a penny in the future. If Adam wasn’t going to propose to her one day, why would he call her to live together? The wife is on Alice’s side, saying, “It’s calmer being married.” And what difference does it make whether she’s married or not, if they’re already living in such a civil marriage?
I think Alice is just hoping Adam will fix everything at his own expense and do it.
