My son and I had been fighting all the time since his wife left him. I thought he was the one who missed her. My daughter-in-law in general was very free-spirited, a girl with a job and ambition, with her own dreams and plans, and my son wanted a family and that was it. So my daughter-in-law left him alone with her daughter later on, because she couldn’t bear it, and she didn’t have enough attention from her beloved husband, since he devoted all his time to his daughter.
I wanted only the best for my son, and that’s why I was angry that things turned out this way, and that’s why I tried to beg my daughter-in-law to come back, and that’s why we quarreled. And subsequently my son cut off all ties as much as possible, hinting in every way he knew that he did not need me, and that he would raise his daughter himself.
We still kept in touch with the little girl, I saw her from time to time, and my son allowed it. But he never brought her to me himself until that winter evening.
They showed up unexpectedly. My son hugged me and kissed my daughter on the cheek. He said he had an important trip to work and that I was the only close relative he had. He brought two whole bags of children’s things, including documents and a medical card. I didn’t realize right away that it was for a reason, and only when I was happy to say goodbye to my son, my granddaughter told me that Daddy wasn’t coming back because she was very sick.
The little girl was crying, saying that Daddy had bone problems and would soon not be able to walk, and then he would disappear altogether. This made me very nervous, so I called my son out. He had no doubt that I would quickly find out from my granddaughter what was wrong.
– It’s not that bad,” he reassured me over the phone, “my friend found a great clinic, and I want to try to be treated there. It’s in Hungary, so I’m going away temporarily. Look after the little one for now, and I’ll try to invest in two months.
It’s rude to say this, but thanks to the illness my baby turned to me again, so can’t I not jump at the opportunity? We talk on the phone again, I take my granddaughter to daycare and English classes, and I support my son as he waits to return home. Every day I pray that everything will go well in his treatment and that when he returns we will be a family again. I will help him in any way I can.
