Sarah and I have been married for three years. She has a younger sister, and when we were still dating, my future wife often said that the younger sister was much more loved in the family than she was. Although both sisters are grown women now, their parents continue to treat them differently.
On our wedding day, we received an iron as a gift from my mother-in-law. The equipment is of a good firm, and it’s not customary to resent gifts, but even my friends, who don’t have it all together financially, were able to present us with a good sum of money. And Sara’s mom only had money for an iron, though she had a good income and owned three apartments in the city.
I lived with my wife in a rented apartment, and even before we were married I took out a mortgage, which I also had to pay off. Maybe it would not have been so offensive, but a year later, when Sara’s sister got married, her mother gave her an apartment. Even for me, the situation became an insult-the older daughter got an iron and the younger daughter got an apartment in a new building. I can’t even imagine how my wife felt.
The situation only got worse when after a while my mother-in-law said she wanted to live with us. Her apartment was being renovated, she was renting out the second one, and she had given the third one to her youngest daughter. She couldn’t think of anything better to do than to move in with us, especially since our house was closer to her work.
When my mother-in-law decided to discuss her move with us. I couldn’t help it and told her what I thought about her splitting her daughters up. My mother-in-law got terribly offended, but my wife supported me. I feel guilty because I was rude to the mother of the woman I love, but I cannot live in the same house with her – I am too angry, not even because of the gift, but because of this attitude towards my wife.
