I am 34 years old. I want to tell you about what is going on in our lives right now. I am married. We have a daughter. When my husband was still in school, his father left him. He left his apartment to his wife and son. I was sure that he had rewritten the apartment to each: that my mother-in-law and my husband owned the apartment equally.
Now my mother-in-law does not live there alone, but with a man. She has been living with him for two years. I understand that my mother-in-law may have a personal life. She lives in a two-bedroom apartment with her common-law husband. And we’ve been living in a rental apartment for eight years.
And the other day I learned a surprising thing. It turns out that the apartment where my mother-in-law lives, in fact, completely belongs to my husband! All the documents are made out exactly in his name!
So while his mom lives in his apartment with her husband, our child and I are living in a rented apartment. I’m just shocked! When I got out of maternity leave, we really wanted to buy an apartment. We wanted to take out a mortgage, but we can’t even save for a down payment. Everything is so expensive! We have to pay a lot of money for rented housing.
My parents are very worried because we don’t have our own apartment. Our daughter is going to school next year, and we still don’t have our own place. My parents have a small amount of money. They are willing to give it to us, but it is not enough for the down payment on the apartment.
I was thinking that if my husband’s mother would add a little extra money, we could buy an apartment with a mortgage. Otherwise, it’s such a shame to pay so much money for a rented place!
My mother-in-law and I have always had a calm and even relationship. She never interfered in our lives, never gave me advice, never lectured me. But she only communicates with her son. She talks to me and my granddaughter very rarely.
She used to ask her husband to help do something in the apartment: change a chandelier, fix a socket. But now her roommate does everything. I resent the fact that my mother-in-law doesn’t want to communicate with her granddaughter. During this time she has never helped me in any way, she has never even babysat her granddaughter. And our daughter is her only granddaughter.
I understand that my mother-in-law wants her own happiness. But why doesn’t she think about how we live? Doesn’t she think that it’s hard for us to live in a rented apartment? I thought that half of the apartment belonged to my mother-in-law, but it turns out that it doesn’t.
I wanted my husband’s mother to at least compensate us a little bit with money. But my husband doesn’t want that. He says.
– I can’t kick my mother out on the street!
And I’m very angry, I say:
– Do you think it’s okay for your mom to live with her man in your apartment while me and our kid live in a rented apartment?
– Do you want me to kick my retired mother out on the street? Let her live out her life in an apartment!
How much longer is she going to live and take suitors to her apartment? And in the meantime, we can’t even buy an apartment with a mortgage! I just don’t know what to do. How can I convince my husband that he has to make a decision? After all, we can’t go on like this.
