My husband’s sister and I couldn’t get along. As soon as I became part of their family, I immediately realized that I was not welcome here. I tried to improve the relationship, to smooth out conflicts, but I faced a wall of incomprehension.
I work in a polyclinic. All my relatives constantly ask me to take a coupon, to make an appointment with the doctor, to get a free test, etc. I never refused and was happy to help my relatives.
For the first two years, my sister-in-law just took advantage of me. She knew that I had a car and was always asking me to take her somewhere. This went on for a very long time, she wouldn’t even let me sleep at the weekend. The interesting thing is that her husband had a car, why did she choose me to be her personal driver?
In addition, she also involved my husband in business. No matter what time my sister called, he would break down and run to her for help. I tried to intervene somehow, but listened to a tirade that I do not understand, because I do not have brothers and sisters.
Family holidays were another challenge for me. All the relatives would get together and give each other gifts. Symbolic, because there’s not enough money for everyone.
And you know, I noticed that no one gave me anything. All the people were wealthy, with money, but I was constantly left with empty hands. Even though I helped everyone and gave everybody presents…
Two years ago my sister-in-law had an operation. I made all the arrangements with the doctors, organized everything, so she did not spend a penny. They didn’t even thank me for that.
When I began to have problems, none of my husband’s relatives asked me how I was, whether I needed any help. While I was lying in the operating room, my husband’s sister called, because she needed some photocopy. She could not go to her husband, to her doctor or at least wait a few hours. So much for gratitude.
After the surgery, we crossed paths with her at a relative’s anniversary party. When my husband and I arrived, everyone was already celebrating. All the guests said hello to me, except my sister-in-law. She showed her displeasure and even left the room when she saw me.
Because of that photocopy, we haven’t spoken in almost a year. Was I supposed to get off the operating table and run around looking for some paperwork? Apparently, it’s time to say no to my relatives, then I’ll live more peacefully.
