One day John was walking down the street when he saw a man and a girl, about eleven years old, walking across the bridge. The girl didn’t look too happy-she smelled a kind of fear, which John sensed, and the stranger was holding the girl’s wrist, squeezing it tightly.
As they neared him, John saw the girl whisper something like “help me” with one lip, and he decided there was no time to lose. He didn’t seem to realize the gravity of the situation, or maybe he just didn’t have time to realize it, but he decided to act, even if it would be a big risk. He ran up to the couple and snatched the girl’s hand from the man.
– Do you know him? – he asked loudly. The girl just shook her head. The man tried to grab the girl again, but John just blocked his path. He immediately called the police and the man tried to escape. John rushed after him and caught up with him, dropping him to the ground and holding him until the police arrived.
