Adam was making tea in the kitchen, and his grandson was in the living room watching TV loudly. He had been asking to go fishing all morning, but Adam was too lazy to go. He had to find and get fishing rods, buy worms, and not go in the sunniest hours, or his blood pressure would skyrocket.
My cell phone rang while I was pondering all sorts of things. The man took the call, thinking it was his daughter from abroad, and was dumbfounded when he heard a different woman’s voice.
– Adam! Hello, it’s me, Samantha. Do you remember?
How could I not? They had lived next door when they were kids, and Samantha had almost married him afterwards. Everything had already been arranged, they started getting ready to celebrate, and she announced at the last minute that she’d changed her mind and left Adam. He had heard that she had married some rich man and moved almost to another country, but his curiosity increased even more when she called.
– Samantha, what about you? Where are you?
– I’m at our school stadium right now. It’s not far from you, is it? Can you come?
– What for? It’s been years. I have children, grandchildren, a beloved wife.
– This isn’t a phone call. I have so much to tell you.
Adam really wanted to go. He dropped the boiling kettle and the tea he was going to drink with his grandson, and rushed straight to his room with the phone. The grandson immediately turned off the TV, rushing after his grandfather into the room and watching him get dressed.
– What? Are we going fishing? – excitedly asked the child. – Thank you, Grandpa!
Adam’s heart gave a little tingle when he said “Grandpa. And it beat faster when his grandson hugged him. He was so tiny and so short, he was still growing up to be a grandfather. And how could he refuse him when he had already decided that they were going somewhere together?
– Sorry, I don’t have time to go to the stadium, I have to go fishing with my grandson.
He didn’t give her a chance to beg him to come, and once again he blotted out that past from his present. The old years are gone, and love will not be the same, and he has a family that he loves and appreciates. Sometimes it’s better to curb your curiosity and get over it than to destroy everything you’ve built so hard over the years.
