Dad never liked Adam. He’d been jealous of my boyfriends before, but Adam was really great, and I loved him with all my heart, so I decided to get married. Since the beginning of the new chapter of my life, which involved moving, being more independent, and talking to my husband about the kids, Daddy only had room for him on holidays and when he came to visit us. But he wouldn’t stop trying to break me and Adam up. He slandered my son-in-law, making up stories about seeing him with another girl or noticing an online casino tab on his computer.
He also secretly told my husband about me, but Adam knew what kind of man my father was. Neither of us fell for my father’s jealousy, and until recently we laughed good-naturedly at his attempts to make things worse between us.
I think Dad went to extremes when he found out that Adam and I were having a baby. Mom was very happy, and he was very offended that he hadn’t been consulted beforehand. Trying to make Adam look bad again, he organized a family dinner that we all cooked as a family. Everyone had a dish that someone did alone, and Adam did best with seafood. During my pregnancy I also wanted all kinds of mussels and shrimp, I ate them all evening with pleasure, but we didn’t even have time to leave before I got sick. I was already familiar with the toxicosis, but this was a different kind of sickness.
Dad made a big fuss, the ambulance came, they took me away. They diagnosed me with poisoning. I was lying under IV fluids, terrified of losing my baby to bad food, and Daddy was buzzing about Adam.
– What a bastard! His wife is pregnant and he didn’t even make sure the food was fresh… What kind of father would he be? He’ll kill you two.
It was his complaints that made me suspect him. Adam is very considerate, would never allow spoiled food at the table, always took the freshest, and back then Mom and Dad bought everything for cooking. What if Dad didn’t store the seafood correctly on purpose or discreetly added something to set Adam up? He keeps hoping I’ll leave him, and I’m really scared around my parent. If he poisoned me, knowing that I am expecting a child and am very worried about his health, what else is he capable of to separate me from my unwanted son-in-law?
