We had been friends for the past ten years, we met on holidays and weekends, I saw all his girls and never noticed his fondness for older women. I didn’t hear about Samantha until after we were married. Adam made a “surprise” out of it, hiding the bride until the last minute, and many of the guests half the morning couldn’t understand why the bride’s mother was holding his hand and where the birthday girl herself was. His friends and family were shocked when it turned out that he was marrying his grandmother. Literally. She already had a marriage and three grown children under her belt, and Adam was old enough to be her son.
He kept his reasons to himself for the first time after the wedding, and there was gossip in our circle that Samantha was a millionaire, and therefore had gotten the young groom. Besides, Adam
had quit his job after the marriage and was being looked after by his wife. As it turned out later – because she felt unwell and wanted her beloved to be near.
They lived together for thirteen months before the woman was overcome by an infection. That’s when Adam came to me for a drink. Not because he was bitter about being a widower, but because Samantha was a sly vixen and had signed three apartments in different cities and a house in Italy over to her children, leaving Adam with only the expensive gifts she gave him, among which there was nothing worthwhile anyway.
– I asked her to buy me a car a million times, and she kept putting it off and putting it off! – my friend was angry.
Adam really chased after wealth, spent more than a year of his life on his grandmother, pretended to be in love for it, fell down in the eyes of his friends and relatives, and was still left with nothing. I supported him in a friendly way with words, but I was disappointed in her myself. He’s not a stupid guy, he had his hands and his job, but he was ready to ruin his life for the sake of some apartments. And what did it lead to?
