I don’t know if my mother was excited about having a baby in general, but she always told me that she wanted a girl. Her life hadn’t worked out quite the way she wanted it to; being married and having a child was far from the heights she strived for. Besides, she had grown up at a time when women were not seen as anything but housewives and bedfellows to their husbands. My mother struggled with that. She didn’t want to get married either, it was just that people around her were stressing her out and she had already had to find a fiancé. Maybe that’s why she and Dad had a pretty cool relationship and sometimes Mom would cry over their arguments.
While I was growing up, my mother kept telling me that, despite the fact that I was a woman, I could succeed in any profession, even a “man’s” profession. There were so many roads and opportunities in front of me. My mother had been saving money for my studies since I was a child, so that I could choose any university that interested me, but I was not drawn to science. I wanted to be a chef.
For the sake of a good diploma, my mother sent me to study in France. I studied, even worked for three years in a great restaurant in Paris. And then I met my love and got married.
My husband has money and doesn’t want me to work too much, and I don’t mind a lazy life without work. I like to cook for myself and my family for free.
For my mother, of course, it was a shock. But even more shocking to her was the news that I was expecting a child. How is it possible, I’m only twenty-five, I’ve only seen France, so now permanently settled at home and will not do anything? I’m sure she’s thinking something like that. Clearly offended. And she is not at all happy to come home. She does not like her son-in-law, thinking that he does not let me work, and now she is also angry about her future grandson. And I do not know how to explain to her that everything suits me.
I like living in and for my family. I’m crazy about the idea of having a baby and being a mom. I am more than happy with my life, and for some reason my mother thinks that I am unhappy since I am not obsessed with my career.
