Some people mistakenly think that since I’m a man I can’t work at the Baby Home, because it’s not a man’s job – to take care of small children. It wasn’t originally a whim of mine – it was hard to get a job after university, and my sister worked there and they hired me too. I was more of a cleaning guy and didn’t have much contact with the kids, but after a year and a half I was offered a couple of shifts somehow, and I liked the kids and I liked taking care of them so much that I ended up transferring.
Every story of getting a child into this Home is special, but I’ll tell you about the one that caused me to lose my job.
After the New Year’s holidays, a little girl was brought in. She was one and a half years old, her parents died in a plane crash, and her aunt who was caring for her was not planning to adopt her and so she came to us. And such a wonderful little girl, very quiet, calm, never any trouble…
I liked to sit with all the children, I liked to feed them all, but this girl’s eyes were like staring into my soul. Going to work, I brought her either sweets or baby puree from the kitchen. My colleague did not like it at all, she thought I was singling out one child among the others, although I was kind to everyone, and this mashed potatoes did not make a difference. When I did not stop after the first reprimand, this employee wrote a complaint about me to the director. Allegedly I was acting suspiciously, singling out the child from the rest, making the other children feel uncomfortable.
The director fired me without a second thought. My sister no longer worked there, there was no one to protect me, and I had to leave.
But my heart bleeds for the girl.
I am still young, and my family think that I have my whole life ahead of me, there will be a wife and children of my own, but what about that little girl? She’ll be all alone if no one adopts her. It’s eating me up.
Do you think I have a chance to adopt her? I don’t have a wife and I just found a steady job at the firm, and I’m worried that the director will turn me down since I worked there. So far, I’m trying to talk my sister and her husband into thinking about adoption, but they don’t really want to take the baby since they have their own children in their plans, not “strangers.”
