A terrible story happened in our village: the six-year-old son of a woodcutter decided to go into the woods to pick mushrooms without asking his parents, but he got so carried away that he wandered into unknown parts of the forest and could not come back. Their pet dog Monty kept trying to follow him, but the boy ordered the dog to go back, and so he ended up in the woods all alone.
The parents started sounding the alarm when the kid didn’t show up for dinner, and after dinner they gathered some men with flashlights and dogs and went into the woods to look for the boy. It was late October, cold enough to at least catch a cold after spending so much time in the cold woods.
We just let Monty go and the dog took off through the whole forest, just looking for him… We thought he smelled something, tried to run after him, but the dog was very fast and ran in strange ways, through which not every man would have been able to pass. Sticking to about the same route, we were calling out the missing boy’s name when suddenly we heard a child crying. Running toward the voice, we found Monty pulling his little master by his pant leg black with dirt and blood. Not only was the baby lost, but he slipped on wet leaves and went downhill, severely cutting his leg, making him unable to even walk, and Monty tried to drag him this way.
The dog was by my side all the way home, never leaving the father’s side as he carried his son on his back, and then sat by the baby’s bedside for days on end. I think if she could talk instead of just bark and whine, she would scold the boy as much as his parents did for not taking her with him and for walking so fearlessly through the woods alone.
