My son and daughter-in-law’s requests for a wedding were phenomenal. Immediately after the engagement they told me and the matchmakers that they didn’t want to wait and that we needed to arrange a wedding as soon as possible and certainly in the summer, so that everyone they knew would be able to attend, and the weather would be nice.
“We only get married once in our lives,” my son said confidently, showing me and my father new wishes.
Our family has never been poor, we were able to pay for our son’s wedding within reason, but when we were bombarded with offers to rent a limo, rent an entire hotel for all the invited guests, buy a custom-made dress for the bride, and throw a party with some “cool DJ,” neither we nor the matchmakers would have had enough money. The bride’s mom said we shouldn’t go along with the kids and pay for everything, but our only son got married, how could we upset him?
We had to take out a loan to pay for everything. We’re still paying it off to this day. My son and daughter-in-law separated four months after the wedding – they didn’t share a rented apartment and couldn’t pay for anything. Both of them had been unemployed since the wedding, and since no one dared to provide for the family, they got divorced.
And who needed that wedding? And the loan, which we still have to pay back and pay back… If my son decides to get married a second time, he will pay for everything out of his own pocket. It’s not the kind of investment you can be 100% sure of.
