Rebecca and Max lived in a small industrial town. Both of their parents had met at work in a factory, became friends and introduced the young ones. Max fell in love with the young, beautiful girl immediately. She seemed so pleasant and kind to him, modest and honest. He asked her out and spent all his scholarship on her, but Rebecca kept pushing him away.
Her parents wanted them to get married, they were saving up for the wedding, they were talking about having kids, and Rebecca just up and left Max and said no to his marriage proposal. She could just turn around and go to another city, away from her relatives and unwanted fiancé, and Max suffered for months because of his unrequited feelings. Finally, he got a job. He also left.
He dated different girls for a couple of years, didn’t think he would ever fall in love again, but he met an amazing girl on a blind date. She was not only modest, but also hard-working. They got married very quickly, started planning children. Max wanted to wait at least another year to wait for a raise. Then they decided to expand the family.
A few months after the birth he was in a hurry to finish a meeting with representatives of other departments of the firm, introducing himself as the new manager, and at the meeting he met Rebecca. She was the secretary to one of the smaller supervisors, herself approaching Max after finishing work.
– Aren’t you busy? Let’s have a coffee, shall we? – She begged him in every way for a date, first making it look like a work meeting, then a friendly one, but Max refused.
Rebecca chased him for weeks. Suddenly she started talking about love, about the wedding, which she refused because she wasn’t ready.
– I’m sorry, you’re holding me up, and I’ve got a wife and a little kid at home,” Max cut him off. – Let’s not talk about the past, shall we? It is no longer of any importance.
Rebecca eventually fell behind, switched to another man who was running a lot of projects. Bad rumors reached Max – as if Rebecca meets with many people to get to the most senior employees and get a richer fiancé. Almost everyone in the company knows that she is only in it for the money.
“She hasn’t changed, so… And it’s a good thing we didn’t work out,” Max thought, packed his things and hurried to the parking lot, to his car. On the way, he dialed his beloved, asking her what he could bring her for dinner and asked her to kiss the baby for him.
