My wife and I have long ago discussed and forgotten her infidelity, but her stubborn lover keeps me on my toes

My wife confessed the affair to me herself. Her childhood friend showed up on the horizon, and they hadn’t seen each other in about twelve years. Together they often met after work, and he wooed her beautifully, and she couldn’t help herself. It only happened once between them, she immediately realized her mistake and her conscience wouldn’t let her cheat on me.

We have been married for thirteen years, we raise our son together, and it is still just a routine – work, school, home. I could understand why she was spending time with that man, finding it a distraction. At first it was hard for me to forgive her, but she swore that she had cut off all ties with her friend and would never look at other men again. I said that I needed time, but in the meantime we were getting closer again, like in our younger days – we went on a date, we took the child to the movies and to the amusement park, becoming one friendly family again, full of love.

I should say right away that I did not control my wife in any way and did not try to see if she was really seeing anyone. It was enough for me that she never stayed late at work, arriving on time, and whenever possible she took days off to spend time with me and my son. We hadn’t discussed her lover in over two and a half months, and he picked up and came to visit when I was home alone. I caught a cold and took a few days off, my wife was at work, my son was at school, and the lover started banging on the door.

– You have to get over it and let your wife go,” he told me from the doorstep. – She loves me. She’s loved me for a long time, since university.
– She told you that?
– She told me before. We’ve regained each other and our happiness together, and your marriage is bursting at the seams.
– What makes you think that? – I was surprised. – Our marriage is perfectly fine. We have a son, our mutual happiness. My wife has frankly told me everything, and she is doing her best to improve the old relationship. You can think whatever you want, but until my wife comes and tells me that she loves someone else and wants to leave me for him, I will assume that she loves only me.

I kicked him out the door, only realizing after my own words that this is it – I believe my wife. She let me down once, but she won’t make that mistake again. If she really loves him, she’ll probably admit it sooner or later and let him know she’s leaving, but I don’t believe she’s trying so hard to devote time to her family now that she’s leaving her.

We can all stumble, the important thing is to hold on and watch our step in the future. My wife is watching very closely, and I’m sure he’s making up some big love story to get me and my wife to break up on my own.
