When I came home from work, I always had a delicious dinner prepared by my mother. She lived with me and my wife, and was in charge of the kitchen, as she had worked in the dining room all her life. I have adored her homemade cutlets since childhood, she made homemade sausage herself, and her chops were the tastiest, although there were times when my wife cooked for me and it was also very tasty. It rarely happened, but I was sure it was because Maria was lazy. If there’s my mother to cook and clean up everything, what’s the point of standing at the stove?
I was happy to eat dinner with my mother alone, because when Maria offered to eat with me, she would always mutter back that she had already eaten or wasn’t hungry. I was also mad at her secretly for not being able to wait for me to eat with her. And my mother implied that Maria could not want to eat when she was at home on the couch all day, doing nothing. She was fired from her job, and she, the lazy one, only eats me working and my mother’s pension. My mother drummed this into my head for months, and then one day I came home and Maria was gone.
I listened to my mother’s lies about how my wife had left me, that she was having an affair on the side, and a bunch of other nasty things, but luckily I had the good sense to contact my mother-in-law. I’d heard enough…
– Didn’t you even notice that Maria didn’t eat anything? She lost so much weight, skin and bones, and your mother wouldn’t let her near the stove, she did her housework, but she wouldn’t feed her. She said: “He who does not work, does not eat”! So she sits at home for days and can eat, and Maria has no right to touch the food? Well, then her foot will no longer be in your house. Thought to ruin my girl, you monsters!
Mom’s behavior amazed me, as well as my blindness. I believed everything I was told and did not notice that my wife was suffering in our house. And Maria got a new job without me and my mother in her arms, she was happy again, and her cheeks were rosy. We met, I apologized, but she does not want to go back to my mother’s house, she says she will soon rent her own apartment. And what about me? She does not offer to rent it together, she only talks about herself. Is it really because of my mother’s jealousy and cruelty that I will lose my wife? Or is it just temporary trouble and Maria will cool down and change her mind? I am very afraid to ask if I can move in with her, because what if she refuses? Especially after her mother’s angry tirade. Mothers in general are not sugar, especially when it comes to the other halves of their children, and for sure my mother-in-law said a lot of things about me…
