My parents spent their entire childhood talking about where to put Alice. She came into their family at a very bad time, and her mother-in-law forbade them to write a waiver in the maternity hospital, and they had to take the girl home. At first, her grandmother still helped, but when she had a stroke, there was no one else to raise her granddaughter. A meager pension and parents’ salaries were not enough to care for a sick person, let alone a child. After a few months, it was decided to temporarily surrender Alice to an orphanage.
– Stay here for a while, while her father and I earn some money,” her mother said.
Alice really believed and waited, because life in the orphanage was no fairy tale at all. There was no private room, no affection and care, everything was almost like in prison, and they also put her to bed during the day. She could not make friends with other children, the teachers did not notice her, and then Alice buried herself with her head in books, which sometimes came to the orphanage from charitable organizations.
The girl always got good grades in school, and after admission she was happy to move to another city. She had very little start-up capital, but she looked for part-time jobs and saved up money to start her own business. Many people laughed when she opened a little store on the Internet where she tried to sell candles that she made herself.
“Is that a job? You can’t make much,” people said.
But the small business was expanding. She was one of the first in the market to do this kind of business, and more and more customers were coming. Her young man also helped her with shipments, and over time he quit his previous job and started making candles with the girl. Gradually it grew and became a family business. The orphanage teachers found out about Alice, since she was the face of her store, and so, because of the wide publicity, her parents also found out. On the pretext of shopping, they contacted their daughter, and after receiving the package, they went to the sender’s address directly to Alice’s home.
The daughter was not happy about their arrival. They forgot about her and she forgot about them. Rude maybe, but she kicked them out the door and her husband helped.
It was hard for them to raise her then and they didn’t even check on her at the orphanage, and now all of a sudden they’re pretending to be the most family. It’s too late. You should have looked for her before, you should have asked her back to your parents. Now Alice is an adult, almost a mother herself, and she doesn’t need such parents.
