Left alone, without a wife, I was forced to live for years on my pension, and I have grandchildren, I want to help my children, and I still need something to eat… So I did not pay the rent for years. I never thought that I would live to see the day when they come to me and try to extort me to move out of the apartment, as it was taken away for non-payment, or I had an urgent debt to repay.
The first thing I did was call my daughter. She was shocked, scolded me, saying that I should have said earlier, she would have helped pay, but since such a hopeless situation, I should rent an apartment to pay rent money to the state, and myself with her son-in-law and the kids to move in. It was still better than being left without an apartment, so I immediately agreed.
My daughter came to pick me up the same week, took my things, and in return she brought a realtor who started looking for tenants. Already at family dinner, I realized that my son-in-law knew all about the apartment and was not only disapproving of my silence, he was furious about it. He snorted at my every word and made it clear that I was not welcome in the house. Although my grandchildren and daughter behaved nicely, happy to see me move in, my son-in-law berated me for every little thing, to the point where I didn’t dare watch anything on TV while he was home.
– Since he’s living here, taking up space, at least let him do something around the house. My mother always helps us when she’s visiting, so let your father do the cleaning or teach the kids to take them to school.
My daughter answered his scolding many times quieter, so that I did not hear and was not offended:
– Daddy helps anyway. He does their homework. As long as it’s winter, I don’t want him to walk. What if he slips and gets hurt?
– And it would be less trouble for us,” my son-in-law spat out.
I wasn’t just “uncomfortable,” I was disgusted. At one time my wife and I let my son-in-law stay with us for years. He never helped around the house, saying he was tired at work, and no one ever said a word to him about it. He had forgotten how much good we did for him, and in return he was ready to get rid of me by any means necessary. At least my daughter was on my side and wouldn’t let me hurt him until we had sorted out the debt.
