My daughter and her son-in-law have been married for eleven years. Initially they had a strong love, which the mother-in-law never managed to destroy, even though she did not like my daughter very much, because she knew how to answer and speak out, and was not afraid to put in place those who like to give advice and incite when no one asks. Mother-in-law was hoping for someone compliant, so my son poured into his ears about how bad my daughter is, how she will build, but love is love, and my mother’s words passed by.
Throughout our marriage I have heard from my daughter literally twice that she and her husband had a fight. She had never cried at his fault and they had never had a major scandal that threatened to destroy their marriage. Until they had twins. During pregnancy it was not easy for them, because my son-in-law seemed to relax, convinced that his beloved would not go anywhere, now that she was pregnant, he spent more time with friends, less time helping at home. When his daughter was on maternity leave, he only helped with money, and all the housework was her responsibility. That’s when my daughter started calling me more often, asking for help, and I myself became a witness to her and her husband arguing.
The children were getting older, they needed more care, more expenses, and my mother-in-law decided to press on to this very point, taking advantage of her son’s discontent. She told him that she had seen my daughter with her lover and that it was possible that she had children with another man. At first my son-in-law didn’t believe her, but then he started to look closely, rejecting any resemblance to my sons and demanding a paternity test. The daughter is in tears again, she doesn’t want to do it. She says it’s not because she really cheated, but because it hurts her pride. She’s never given a reason to believe that she’s interested in anyone other than her husband, and her mother-in-law has such power over them. She sticks her neck out, screaming that either he accepts things the way they are, or a divorce.
I trust my daughter and condemn my son-in-law and mother-in-law, but on the other hand, I don’t see why my daughter can’t just get tested and rub their noses in it. Do you think it’s really about pride, or did the mother-in-law thumb her nose at the truth?
