Monica jumped onto the crowded bus at the last minute, making her way to the back. She settled at the back door, out of habit, began to look around the crowded cabin, and then suddenly her eyes caught on the redhead. She looked more closely, and her heart went in her heels. Standing at the center door was Adam.
They had been good friends since high school, and began dating after graduation. Since they studied at different universities, they didn’t always get a chance to go on a date or spend time together in any other way. Adam tried very hard to keep up with everything, but he had a lot of things to do, and he also had a part-time job. He hoped Monica would make an effort, but she happily agreed to break up with him when he proposed during one of her arguments.
When she realized what she had done, it was too late – he had changed his number, abandoned social media, and changed his place of work. She realized with horror that she had no idea where to go or where to look for him. All year long she had thought about him, remembered him, thought of the speech she would say when they ran into each other, and now she had her chance. Adam was very close.
She took a deep breath, figured out how to say hello, started making her way through the crowd, and Adam took off at the first stop. Monica tried to pull out with everyone else, but people held on tightly, as if not letting her catch up with him and make things right.
Not fate, apparently. There was no need to do anything. What was, was gone, and Monica was late again.
