Barbara suggested that I sign some kind of contract before we got married.

Barbara from our first date was a little suspicious. The other guys said that she was just out of this world, very interesting, perpetually enthusiastic – she was an actress for a reason. She asked me a lot about life, about goals, about work, about my favorite places and what I would like to name my children. I was not in the least intimidated by the fact that she ran ahead, and looking in her clear blue eyes, I could tell anything.

I was flattered that a girl like that would pay attention to me. I was not handsome, but I worked in a good firm under my father. This gave me some stability and the salary was very good. This is what I tried to take Barbara with me, so as not to lose her. After two months of a relationship she expressed her desire to live together and she said she wanted to get married. My parents were overjoyed, because she brainwashed them with her contrived kindness. So we were given a two-room apartment.

I immediately decided it was time to propose to Barbara. I bought her a ring, took her to a restaurant, and she squealed with joy. Before we even started talking about the wedding…
came to me with an offer to make “some kind of a contract.” Allegedly, she had agreements with some company she was planning to shoot for, and she needed a guarantee. She talked confusingly and incomprehensibly, but I was willing to do anything. It was a good thing I had the good sense to mention the contract to my dad, and he asked me to send him a copy so he could show it to the lawyer.

There were a lot of tricks and direct words in the contract, which I had missed because I had not read it carefully, indicating that after the divorce all my property would go to Barbara, including the apartment and even my car. Fortunately, I did not have time to sign anything, nor did I have time to beg her – my father chased such a daughter-in-law into the neck and broke off our engagement himself.

It’s hard to believe that I almost ran into such a fortune hunter. I hoped Barbara
loved me for the kind of person I was, despite my unassuming appearance, and she wanted to cheat and steal from me. Is it realistic to find a beautiful girl who won’t marry me for my money?
