Frank had serious intentions and hopes for a relationship with Rebecca. They had been dating for eight months, had recently decided to live together, and everyone was pushing them to get married as soon as possible. Mom even insisted that she and Frank pick out a beautiful ring, but he kept thinking that it was too soon and Rebecca would have to wait. He didn’t realize that she was a regular visitor to the guy living downstairs until he came home early and found the two of them in bed. They didn’t see or hear him, too engrossed in each other, and Frank was afraid to start a scene in front of a stranger. He wanted to put Rebecca in her place in the evening, but again he couldn’t.
As the weeks went by, Frank did nothing about the cheating. He grieved over his failure, over the cheating girl, and kept waiting for her to be the one to break up with him, but Rebecca acted nice and said she loved Frank dearly. She would disappear supposedly to go shopping, and she would go down to the neighbor’s house and come back as if nothing had happened.
If not for his mother, who found out about Frank’s problem, he probably would never have dared to let Rebecca go. As a future mother-in-law, she would not have tolerated a cheating mother, and Rebecca herself told her that Frank knew all about it. He didn’t chase her away, but he didn’t ask her to stay either. The most painful thing was to know that she would build her happiness with the man next door, and they would always have a chance to bump into each other in the stairwell. But Rebecca didn’t stay in that house for long and broke up with her lover after a couple of weeks.
