All my life my husband reproached me for sitting on his neck, for not earning enough money. He used to point me out as much as he could, making me look bad in front of his family, in front of mine, and in front of our friends. The only one he seemed afraid to speak out in front of was our son. In his eyes, he wanted to be an example.
Last year I got a promotion, which finally made my salary a little bit more than my husband’s. I was just lucky that my maternity leave made the position vacant, and my boss, joking about me not thinking about going on maternity leave, transferred me. My husband liked it even less than my previous salary. Before, he had been the head of the family, had the right to open his mouth to everything, because he contributed more to the family budget. I hoped to rub his nose in his work, but he gave me a scandal while my son was in extracurricular activities.
– You think you’re gonna give me a hard time about it now? Your job is nothing. You do nothing useful in life, you are a parasite on me and my son. All you women are like that!
That was the last straw. I filed for divorce. My son was thirteen, and we wanted him to decide which of us he was going to stay with. He grew up more like my son, because I took more care of him, paid more attention to him, so he wanted to stay with me. My husband was furious, but there was nothing he could do about it.
Within four months this misogynist was engaged to another woman. He hoped to take my son away, because I was a single mother and he had a family, but he did not want to go to a strange woman’s family. He had seen his father, he had had enough.
– You’re the one who put him up to it. You brainwash him into hating me,” the husband spat.
But the son actually thought very highly of his father. He really loved him.
– I didn’t tell him anything. He just doesn’t understand why I left you. He asks me if you had a mistress to begin with. And you yourself would go and tell him why you divorced,” I said, while my ex stared dumbfoundedly back at me, not finding it necessary to voice any of the truth. – Are you ashamed of yourself? You don’t want to tell your son how you humiliated me for years?
My ex-husband did tell him. As I expected, my husband significantly lowered in the eyes of his son, no matter how hard he tried to prove that he was good and I – bad. Now the kid doesn’t want to see him at all. And all because it is not the truth that needs to be changed, but his behavior. If his new bride is not stupid, she should understand what he is like and call off the wedding as soon as possible.
