Rebecca came to the blind date very dressed up. She spent the whole day getting herself all cleaned up. She usually had bad luck with guys – sometimes she would meet an old man, sometimes an old man who was ten years younger than her, sometimes without any serious intentions. Rebecca was twenty-seven, and she wanted to get into a serious relationship and get married as soon as possible.
The cafe was so empty that she immediately found a broad back of a blond guy sitting all alone. His name was Philip, and they had met online. His picture wasn’t very clear and only from one angle, but Rebecca was pleasantly surprised by his appearance when she sat down across from him.
The guy smiled a lot, talked a little about himself and questioned Rebecca more. He was very much impressed by her serious attitude, because he too was twenty-seven, and he too was thinking of starting a family.
– Only I have a secret,” he said cryptically.
– A terrible secret? – Rebecca asked, keeping him in a playful mood.
– I don’t think so,” Philip sighed heavily. – You wouldn’t know it to me, but my father’s Korean. My mom’s from here, so me and my sister were born real Europeans.
– Is it a secret? – Rebecca was perplexed.
Philip shook his head, but that’s not what he meant.
– Asian roots are usually stronger, but genetics is a strange thing. Looking ahead… what if we have an Asian baby? We can always explain it to the people closest to us, but other people will look at us sideways. And not at me, but… at you.
Rebecca laughed at his words.
– What does it matter what people say? – She was in high spirits, and she was even more impressed by Philip’s farsightedness and honesty. – She couldn’t wait to daze her parents with the birth of an Asian-looking child. I wonder how Mom will react…
Philip exhaled in relief, reaching for Rebecca’s hand and squeezing it affectionately.
– Were there any girls who turned you down right away after your secret? – she asked cheerfully.
– Not yet,” the boy answered, “because I was the first one to tell you. I’ve never liked anyone on a first date as much as I liked you before.
