Sarah very rarely showed any tender feelings, which made Robert seem cold, unapproachable and in some way mysterious. They had been married for nine and a half years, and he could not help feeling that there was something he still did not know about his wife. He was always telling her everything about himself, and he never heard anything back. Elementary how the day was at work, what she did afterwards he could not get out of her. He thought she was like that with everyone, until he caught her on the phone talking to someone suspicious. She was laughing gleefully and talking nonsense about things she’d tried on in the boutique outside work.
It wasn’t fair or nice, but when his wife left for the kitchen, leaving her phone on charge, Robert reached into her cell phone, the last contact she called was a certain “Darling.”
The scandal wasn’t long in coming, especially after both “Prince” and “Kitten” were found in her phone book. Robert was sure that behind these idiotic nicknames were at least lovers, but Sarah dispelled all doubts.
– “Darling” is my brother John, remember? “Prince” is the vet who treated our dog. His last name is Prince, I thought it would be funny to sign him that way. And “Kitten” is Helena from work.
My husband immediately cooled down, started apologizing. He spent the next few days tiptoeing around Sara, trying to make amends, but she was colder than ice again. To placate her, Robert brought her expensive gifts, even bought her a laptop, but she waited until he spent all his savings on her and suddenly announced that she wanted a divorce – she had recently met her first boyfriend, whom she was going to marry at twenty, and he left her for another. They had been seeing each other in secret for months, and he had already decided to leave his wife for Sarah. There was a reason she had been distancing herself from him lately, acting aloof, Robert just didn’t get to the end of the phone book and didn’t have time to suspect “Lovely.”
