It all started when Monica and David broke up. They’d been dating since high school, and there was no doubt they were getting married. He had been in love with her for a long time, she didn’t respond for a long time, and then she decided to give it a try, and here they are in their senior year and David is jokingly talking about getting married and having future children. It was so cute, and I was a little jealous of my girlfriend, not paying as much attention as she did to David’s joking and harmless comments about her weight. Monica herself had never been light as a feather, more like a little bunched up, but not too fat. The other kids didn’t think of making fun of her, and David could afford some harmless quip about her eating pie from the cafeteria. No one paid any attention to that except Monica herself.
She and I kept in touch after high school, and I was the first to know that David had dumped her. They were both in their third year, they were already talking seriously about getting married, and suddenly David dumped her for his classmate. She was tall and very thin, like a magazine cover model, though, in my humble opinion, not as beautiful as Monica. But how could a heartbroken friend prove anything?
Since then, her first attempts to lose weight began. She was convinced that she could bring David back if she lost a few pounds. She tried to eat right, tried extreme and “fast” diets, exhausted herself by working out in the gym and so on, but it didn’t bring her much results. She wasn’t losing weight, she was only gaining weight and muscle mass.
At that time we didn’t see each other often and didn’t communicate, besides, I had my graduation coming up, then I had a job. It was hard to find something in my field of study, and my mother was going to work, so I agreed to go with her. So Monica and I didn’t see each other for more than three years. Upon my return I could barely get in touch with her through her mother. Turns out Monica only weighed 30 pounds at 153. Since diets didn’t work for her, she decided to give up food, and so began to lose weight.
David didn’t come back to her, of course. She began to have many health problems, she lost some of her hair, her job, and her life in general. Her mother forced her to the doctors to get her daughter out.
When I saw Monica, I couldn’t recognize her. It was impossible to see her former beauty in her gaunt face. What was it all for? For some guy who couldn’t keep his mouth shut and made remarks about her weight…
Girls should realize by now that a relationship that you don’t feel comfortable in and after which you endlessly dig around in yourself is not normal. It’s not love, it’s humiliation, especially when you have to deal with the consequences for years.
