Not too long ago, we were celebrating my sister-in-law’s birthday. Alina had never had any friendly feelings for me, and I reciprocated in kind. All of our relatives gathered for the celebration: from grand-nephews to the birthday girl herself. Each of the relatives felt it their duty to congratulate my husband on his sister’s name day, and at the same time spoke with admiration of his generosity.
My husband and I accepted the congratulations and could not understand anything. We were holding an envelope which contained a gift of ten thousand rubles. I think the gift was quite all right for such a celebration, but it was hard to call it generous. Everything fell into place when my mother-in-law started congratulating the birthday girl.
– Mark, it’s your sister’s birthday today and it’s wonderful! She is still single and doesn’t have a date, so you, as the older brother, have to take care of her and keep her safe. You now own two apartments, so you will give one of them to Alinka.
Everyone present started to applaud, and I almost fell out of my chair, because I did not expect such impudence. But it did not end there.

My husband and I actually had two apartments. One place I inherited from my grandmother, we made some cosmetic repairs and rent it out. The money we get for renting it out, we pay for the mortgage, for an apartment in a new building. We actually live there. My spouse has no rights to the apartment I inherited, I planned on giving it to our child, but no way to my sister-in-law.
