That’s what my father said when he brought in his next paycheck in the evening. It was the turn of the millennium, but the wage problems were still an issue. There were months when we ate only what we could gather from the vegetable garden.
The main expense of the family budget was on food, utilities and personal care products. But my father for some reason it did not understand, so he accused my mother of waste. After which they decided that this time my father will go shopping himself.
So he went the next morning with a not insignificant shopping list. He was gone about an hour, or even an hour and a half. He came back, put the bags on the table, and proudly said:
– Here, and it’s all half the price. And you said there was no way you could do it. By the way, I also bought some sausage.
The next day mom made soup, which according to dad was “not very rich. And sandwiches from the sausage he bought the day before were not only bad for him, even our dog
refused to eat them.
– What’s the matter, dear,” my father said to my mother, “you’ve always been a great cook. Why is everything so disgusting and tasteless now?
Yes, it must have taken him a while to realize that cheap produce is cheap food. If you want to eat good food, you have to be willing to spend. Now my mother was in charge of the groceries again and everything was back to back to the way things used to be.
So that’s the story.
