With my head slightly tilted, my husband, still my husband, is standing right on the threshold of the apartment.
– Let me come in, I need to pick something up.
Although I was confused as to whether there was a need to let him come in, given his last visit, where money was also among his most needed items, I decided to talk to him.
– On your last visit, you took what wasn’t yours as well. If there’s anything left that belongs to you, of course, go ahead.
Once in the kitchen, taking a seat on the couch, he said:
– It was a bit of a mistake, I wanted to apologize for that. I’d like to pick up the screwdriver and drill.
– Well, go ahead and get it.
I went and got the tools he asked for from the loggia and left them in the hallway. He continued to sit down in the meantime.
– I’ve caused you a lot of pain,” he began to say. – Though you are a fine woman and a good man, and you have done much for me, it is no longer possible for us to live together.
There were tears in his eyes, probably for the first time in all the time I had known him. I really wanted to feel sorry for him, to hug him as I had always done before, to give him hope that together we possessed great power, but the situation was such that it all made no sense anymore, because we had become strangers.
– You had already made your decision after thinking it over carefully, and now you’re just a little confused. However, you should know that after we break up you won’t have a chance to change things back, I’m not scaring you now, I’m just telling it like it is, the way I feel about it.
– But you have tremendous power, don’t you?
– Yes, I have the peculiarity of being able to forgive, and that is the manifestation of my power. But you don’t step into the same river twice, so, honestly, I don’t have the strength to forgive and wait any longer.
He took the tools in his hand and headed for the door:
– I think I’ll file for divorce myself, I hope you don’t mind?
– Whatever you want, I won’t make any obstacles to it,” I answered and closed the door.
I was quite surprised at how noble my husband was acting. It was the first time he’d been able to say anything dignified and sincere in a long time.
My eyes were full of tears; of course, I had assumed what the outcome would be, but my inner state was not prepared for it.
I won’t hide it, I was hurt in my heart, and yet, I was still afraid of losing my family, even though my family had long ago ceased to be. Now each of us will have our own way and life, and no one knows what surprises it holds except God Himself.
