Susan called and said she was coming with the kids for the weekend. We had a normal relationship with my sister-in-law. From time to time she would come to our town, since she and her mother-in-law and other relatives were huddled up in the region.
My husband and I met at the institute. We dated for two years and decided to get married. After we got married we moved to my place so we didn’t have to rent an apartment. My parents were at the dacha more often, so we didn’t disturb each other.
We live for ourselves. We travel a lot, develop and work on our personal business. And my sister-in-law is immersed in her family – she sees nothing but her children and husband.
And so she arranged to meet her friend in Moscow. Naturally, she was going to stay with us. The hotel was expensive, and her friend could not accept her – she lived with her mother-in-law anyway. My relative expected that she would meet me and I would entertain her children. You bet – my husband’s own nephews!
Since my husband has a busy schedule at work, I knew that all the cares of hosting my in-laws would fall on my shoulders. But I didn’t scandalize – it was only for two days. They arrived on Friday and were supposed to leave on Sunday.
I fed the guests when they arrived and put them to bed, since it was quite late. In the morning after breakfast, my sister-in-law and her children went downtown to show the capital to the younger generation. They did not return until evening. With empty hands.
I do not understand how it is possible … At least buy bread for dinner or a cake for tea! But apparently Susan hadn’t been taught. On Sunday morning, my sister-in-law left the kids with me and rushed over to her friend’s house. I fed them breakfast. Or rather, tried to.
– Soup with water. Mom cooks it in broth for us! – The eldest one resented me.
– Well, I’m sorry. Tomorrow I’ll make another one. Moreover, my mother did not tell me what you like, – I resented.
– We came to visit you, you could have tried. Is it so hard to buy normal groceries?
I just poured the soup and went into the living room. Not hungry, then.
– Where shall we go? – Junior asked me an hour later.
– Where would you like to go? – I smiled.
– I don’t know, something interesting…
– You’ll think of something, you’ll tell me.
I minded my own business. So the evening came – my nephews did not think of anything, and I did not impose. Then my sister-in-law came back.
– Why didn’t you go anywhere? – She got indignant.
– Because your children have not decided where they want.
– Once they asked me to do something, and I didn’t even bother. Your nephews came to stay with your uncle, to be locked up,” Susan shouted, and she reeked of alcohol.
– Who they came to, that’s who they complain to,” I answered calmly.
I went to my room. The show continued when my husband returned. By that time my sister-in-law’s children had had time to complain to her and tell her about the morning soup. After the scandal with her husband, my sister-in-law slammed the door and disappeared with the children to an unknown destination.
– I will never let them come here again,” muttered her husband.
After that incident the phone lines started ringing. My husband and I were accused of every mortal sin and called selfish.
– Mom, don’t pick on me. You don’t come here empty-handed, and my wife doesn’t have to entertain other people’s children. It’s their own fault for staying at home. You keep dancing to their tune, but we’re not going to,” said the husband to his mother.
