The photos, captured by photographer Tom Kish at the Gypsy Gold Ranch in Barnesville, Ohio, show the new mom nuzzling her little one and keeping a close eye on them. The tiny foal seems to already know that its mother is there for it no matter what.

Donkeys have been used for centuries as working animals in dry, arid regions because they are able to conserve their body fluids better than horses and other equines. A donkey can go without water for a couple of days, while a horse needs at least 1 gallon per day.
Physical exercises are important for the newborn donkey because they help him grow strong and healthy. The baby donkey needs to get exposure to the sun as much as possible because he needs vitamin D to grow properly.
Assuming you are not an experienced donkey breeder, I suggest contacting a local donkey rescue or sanctuary to inquire about hosting a foal for the summer. Many sanctuaries would be happy to have someone volunteer to help care for their animals, and it would give you plenty of time to get to know the little guy before deciding if adopting is right for you.
