My mom and my husband’s mom literally call us every day and demand the same thing from us. They are demanding that we hurry up and become parents and make them grandmothers. They just refuse to understand that we don’t want to live with our child in a rented apartment. They think it’s all a small thing.
My husband and I have been married for five years. Even before we got married, we agreed that since we didn’t have a place to live, we wouldn’t be in a hurry to become parents. We were saving up to buy an apartment.
Since we were living in a rented apartment, it wasn’t easy to save money. That’s why we didn’t want to have a baby yet. And our parents were convinced that we were just afraid of the responsibility.
– But people live with children in rented apartments and nothing! – says my mother-in-law.
She always gives the example of her daughter, who had her child in a rented apartment. They live at her husband’s parents’ house or at her mother-in-law’s house. And when they have a fight with everyone, they then live in a rented apartment. But at most they have enough money for two or three months.
My husband’s sister thinks it’s normal. I don’t think it’s normal. What about when their kid grows up? And they’ll be running from apartment to apartment. What about daycare and school?
My husband and I want our child to have everything: a normal apartment, normal food, and normal clothes. We can’t afford any of this yet.
And when I go on maternity leave, we will not have enough money at all. That’s why we are in no hurry to have a baby.
– We have clothes for the baby! We’ll take the stroller! And my neighbor is giving away a good crib! What else do you need? – says my mother-in-law.
We are already tired of all this. My husband and I defend ourselves as best we can. But recently we’ve even had the urge to move to a new rented apartment, change phone numbers, and say nothing about it to our mothers.
We’re just so sick of hearing people talk about how it’s time for us to become parents.
