Relatives are the closest people who live as a family, but sometimes some family members start to get cocky and behave in a way that is not very nice to other relatives, and at such moments there is no time for pleasantries.
My spouse and I got married right after graduation. We lived in my inherited apartment and worked. The apartment was tiny, but we were insanely happy about that too, and besides everything else it was a couple of hours away from the office where we worked. Then we decided to take out a mortgage, but my spouse’s mother talked us out of it. We listened to her advice because her daughter and her husband had been unable to close the mortgage for many years.
And then my sister-in-law and her husband thought of buying new furniture. They didn’t have the cash to buy it, so they asked us to take over the credit, since they could not get the money they needed because of the mortgage. My sister-in-law’s husband swore he would pay it off every month. We didn’t smell a catch, so we agreed to help the in-laws. The first few months my in-laws were really faithfully giving us money to pay the loan, but then they began to delay payments, a couple of times even mother-in-law asked us to pay for them, and they said they would pay later.
Then they started to feed us promises that all pay back, and then the husband of my sister and said that if the loan is ours, then we pay it and they do not have money and in the near future will not.
We did not like such behavior of our relatives. It ended up that we were still more than five years in arrears on the loan of dear relatives. One day my spouse’s sister and her husband came to see us again and happily told us that they both got good jobs and now plan to buy a car on credit. I think you’ve figured out by now who the loan was for them.
My spouse listened carefully to the in-laws’ request and then told them that we were also taking out a mortgage on an apartment and they were well ensconced, on our necks, only we had no more room for them there. My sister-in-law and her brother-in-law had a big fight that day. With family sister-in-law, we stopped all communication, although the mother of the spouse sometimes calls and blame us for the fact that her daughter’s husband could not get a job because we did not want to buy him a car. Each time my mother would try to shame us for refusing and tell us that relatives shouldn’t do that.
And what should relatives do to each other? Well, obviously not to use each other or get on each other’s necks…
