My husband’s relatives don’t understand why I bought a second pair of boots and advise me to be thrifty

We had an incident recently that just threw me off-balance. I don’t like to give people advice, especially about what and how to spend the money I earn. But my husband’s relatives consider it their duty to give out such advice. They do not understand when it is appropriate to give advice and when it is better not to interfere. I once made my husband a wonderful surprise for his birthday.

We have to work hard to provide for and raise three children. We discuss and budget every expensive purchase beforehand. We are used to giving each other only necessary and useful things. For a long time we do not buy all sorts of cute souvenirs. I bought my husband a cool winter jacket. He wouldn’t dare buy such an expensive one, because it cost twenty-two thousand rubles.

That’s a very big amount for our budget. I wanted to please him and make sure he was always warm in winter. I chose with love and the highest quality and I didn’t look at the price. When he saw how much his jacket cost, my husband began to regret that I gave such money. However, over time, he realized that the jacket was worth it. To thank me for the gift, my husband decided to buy me new boots.

I am very neat, so I rarely buy shoes. And since my husband began to insist, I agreed. To my surprise, we quickly found very nice boots that just fit perfectly on the foot and looked great. We bought them for seven thousand rubles.

Satisfied and happy that we had such a good shopping trip, we drove home. We stopped at the supermarket for some sweets for tea to please the kids and to be in a nice family atmosphere. But then my husband’s phone rang. It turned out that his brother and his wife were coming to visit us.

I was sure he was only coming to borrow money. I never had a warm relationship with them. Their insolent behavior always put me off. One time I noticed his wife had stolen my favorite lipstick. Even though I was next to her in the room. That kind of behavior just shocked me. They came right after us. We were still standing at the entrance. And then Maria didn’t say hello:

– Oh, what have you got there? What did you buy? New boots? So you do have boots! What’s the second one for?

Then my husband’s brother joined in the questioning:
– And really, what did you buy the second boots for? You should have worn the first ones!

Their insolence and inappropriate curiosity robbed me of my tongue. My husband got angry because of such inquiries and directly inquired about the purpose of my brother’s visit. It turned out that I was not mistaken. He had come to borrow money and ask for more of our jam. I’m not greedy, but such insolent people should not be indulged. Why should I supply them? This is my work: in the summer heat, not every housewife is engaged in the winter. But I do it for my family, not for insolent relatives. My husband said he couldn’t keep them busy right now. Helped them only one jar of jam. The relatives were very unhappy that they came to us for nothing.

They did not expect to be refused. And my brother’s wife began to reproach me for not having enough money in the family because I was buying extra. I told her that I didn’t need any advice and that I would decide for myself what to spend my own money on. I also asked her when she was going to return my lipstick. My husband’s brother interrupted me and started saying all sorts of nasty things about me. My brothers ended up fighting and my husband told me not to come to him for money again. His wife should find a job to patch up the family budget. How can you communicate with such relatives? I do not want to quarrel at all, but I cannot bear such impudence.
