I would really like your opinion, maybe someone has been in a similar situation. My spouse and I live in a rental apartment. We recently had a baby boy, so I am on maternity leave and it is clear that we are having a hard time financially.
My spouse is very dear to our family, so he works very hard to make sure that our family does not need anything. On top of that, we still have to pay the rent and my loan, which I had to take out before I got married, because my family needed the money.
It is clear that because of all this we will not soon be able to collect the money for the first payment to buy our own home with a mortgage.
My parents live far away from us, in a tiny town, but my spouse’s mother lives practically next door to us. My mother-in-law has two apartments, one that she lives in and one that she rents out, she says was bought for her favorite son.
Both of these apartments are in the neighborhood. However, my husband and I never wanted to live with our parents and dreamed that we would be able to do everything on our own.
Now I want to cut to the chase. After we got another rent increase, my mother-in-law started insisting that we move into her one-bedroom apartment (which is what she now rents).
She tells us that we should live while we are young, and not give all of his wages to who knows who. She also says that it would allow her to stop feeling lonely, and she would be able to see her grandson more often.
However, I’m sure that if we move into this housing, I would stop feeling like the lady of the house. My spouse also wants to realize himself as a man and earn his own living space. And it’s no fool’s errand to say that the love between daughter-in-law and mother-in-law depends on the distance between them.
I am also very much afraid that after we move into my mother-in-law’s apartment our relationship with her will deteriorate. There are bound to be those among the readers who will say that I’ve just watched too many soap operas, but the prospect of living next door to my spouse’s parent worries me greatly.
I have no idea how to tell my mother-in-law that we decided not to move into her apartment? My mother-in-law is very insistent, and she says she will stay out of our family life. And maybe it is not in our case to “go overboard” and need to accept such a favorable offer?
What do you think?
