When Cece, a three-year-old cat, went missing from her home in southeast London last October, her owners assumed the worst. They never imagined they would see their beloved pet again — much less on live TV.
But this past weekend that’s exactly what happened. During halftime of a soccer game being broadcast on BT Sport, one of the announcers was startled by something sprinting across the field. It wasn’t another player or ball; it was Cece!
The ecstatic family later told reporters that they had “given up hope” of ever seeing their cat again and were overwhelmed with joy at having her back safe and sound.
The next day, Wednesday player Fernando Forestieri – who caught the cat at the game – announced that he had adopted her and named her “Stella”. He shared a picture of himself with Stella on Instagram, writing: “She slept in my bed last night.”
It is not clear how the cat came to be at Hillsborough Stadium, but it was probably either lost or abandoned. “Topsey had been missing for about three months and we’d put up posters all around the neighbourhood, so when my daughter-in-law called me to say she thought she’d seen him on TV I couldn’t believe it,” Allison said.
Worried sick over her lost cat, Allison headed down to the soccer game with a few friends to see if they could find Topsey. Sure enough, there he was – perched high up in a tree near the stadium watching the action below!
“Then we got a phone call from somebody who had been at the game on Saturday and said there was a cat running about on the pitch. When my daughter-in-law rang me last night she thought it must have been another cat, but then I realized it must be our Topsey.
Topsey is now safe back home with her family where she will undoubtedly spend all of her time cuddling up next to them on the couch while they watch football matches together in peace from now on.
