Kevin dreamed of finding his birth mother

From the age of 12, Kevin had imagined his first meeting with his mother. He was an orphan all these years. But as soon as he stepped outside the fence of the orphanage, he immediately began searching for his parent. For some reason he didn’t set out to find his father. All he wanted was to look at his mother and look into her eyes and ask why she had abandoned him.

He came to the orphanage when he was a year old. He was a perfectly healthy and calm baby. While other children who were good-looking were adopted, Kevin was not so lucky. He was not handsome. He had large features, mouse-like hair, and a strange build. However, as the boy grew older, he became more handsome. His chances of finding adoptive parents were minimal, because usually young children are chosen.

After graduating from the orphanage, Kevin trained as a carpenter and began restoring furniture. Thanks to his established connections, he was able to find his mother’s contacts.

He stood at the door and could not knock. It was as if something was holding him. But then he raised his hand and knocked loudly on the wooden door. By the shuffling steps it was clear that the door was about to be opened by an older man. Kevin tried to control his emotions, but the sweat on his forehead gave him away.

– Are you from the gas office? – asked the elderly woman.

Kevin was confused and nodded his head.

– I called you three times already, come in, check the pipes.

Kevin walked in and looked around the old apartment. The wallpaper was peeling off in some places, and the plaster was falling on his head. He looked at the woman and couldn’t quite figure out if she was his mother or not.

– What happened to you? – he asked.
– You can smell gas.

Kevin found the problem and fixed it quickly. While he was on the case, he learned a lot about the landlady. She was disabled as a child, looked like an 8-year-old child. And on the receipt for the light, which was on the coffee table, he read the woman’s last name. There was no doubt – it was his mother.

After he finished, the hostess offered him tea.

– Do you have children? You should make repairs…
– I had a son, but they took him away. They said I was an incomplete mother, I could do harm to him. But that’s silly, I’m perfectly sane. I was normal until I was 8 years old and then I was hit by a car. Some problems began, and there was no one to look for a normal doctor. I had a healthy baby, too. The groom ran away at once, the neighbors gave me a stroller and a crib. But the guardianship took the baby away anyway.

The woman cried. Kevin realized that it wasn’t at all his mother’s fault that he was raised in an orphanage. He could not tell her the truth, but he could help her. Right the next day he set about fixing up the apartment. He was sure to tell her the most important thing, but only a little later.
