Transferring the elderly doctor lay papers with the results of tests and examinations. The only option he had was IVF. Although, he suggested continuing to believe in miracles and trying to do everything the natural way. Except he didn’t offer any guarantees. The dream of a child could only be realized through IVF.
There was nothing to decide. Laura and Richard had been together for four years. And they dreamed of only one thing: a baby. Igor was less emotional, but Laura was on the verge of losing her mind if she did not get pregnant soon. She was also very jealous of her friends who were already lucky enough to be mothers.
And now what to do? Take out a loan? But will it work, if there is already drawn up a mortgage? And if so, how do I pay it back? Richard had a grandmother who was saving for her beloved and only grandson. She did not have to refuse. So the couple decided to tell their grandmother everything.
Only she wasn’t ready for such a turn of events. For her it was a real sin. She believed that if she was not destined to give birth to a child, she should not resort to artificial means. A child was God’s will.
Laura tried to change my mind. She said the church had nothing against IVF. But my grandmother didn’t trust the modern church anymore. She suggested it was better to adopt a child than to make a soulless person.
Another option was Laura’s parents. Their finances were not so good, but they had something. The father was not particularly against it, but the mother had the last word.
Except that she was not enthusiastic about the idea. She said it might not work the first time. And the second time might not work either. In her opinion, now there was no time for children. Richard had an office job and a mortgage. Also lived in a one-bedroom apartment. No conditions for raising a child. And my mom believed that a miracle could happen. The main thing was to try harder and not listen to anyone.
Dad tried to join in the conversation, but Mom was adamant. She also told all her relatives. Mom’s own sister was the first one to call Laura. And the lecture began. She thought this was Laura’s way of trying to hold on to her husband. She began to tell her sad life story. That with her three children she was now alone. Laura wanted a child for herself. Her husband had nothing to do with it.
But the aunt kept on insisting. Started telling tales of how hard it was for a woman alone with a child without a man’s help. Then she constantly asked her relatives to babysit the baby in order to make her own life. And children then, in the end, grow up and ungrateful.
My own older sister was the next to call. At this point she and her husband were on vacation at a ski resort. Except that the sister did not understand anything from her mother’s words. Laura started to tell everything from the beginning: that the doctor advised to do IVF, and she and her husband started to ask her relatives for financial help, and everyone just started to judge her. Laura decided to ask her sister for help.
To which her sister started to make excuses, that all the money was being spent on vacation. In the end she also began to dissuade her sister. Laura was only twenty-six years old. Her sister thought it was not worth the rush yet. The sister herself was not going to have a baby until she was thirty. And she was twenty-eight. For her now, the priority was recreation: so many beautiful places, resorts. She had to live for herself. And my sister agreed with my mother that it was not worth spending such a large sum on IVF.
Everything was clear: Mom had already talked to her sister. So don’t let her lie that she didn’t understand anything. And every member of the family had an excuse. Laura started crying to her husband. Begged for a loan. Very much she wanted to be a mother.
And then her husband started talking about waiting a little longer, too. He hoped that soon he would get a promotion, and then he would be able to buy a bigger apartment. And then it would be possible to have children. Laura didn’t expect that from him. She became very offended. It was high time she had a baby, and she had options. Why are all her relatives so callous and do not want to understand the girl?
