Mark was graduating from university when suddenly he had the idea of marrying his first high school sweetheart, Melissa! Melissa was good looking, but despite that she was a kind and intelligent girl. She at that time was also just finishing her thesis. The young people agreed to marry as soon as they had finished their thesis.
Mark decided to tell his mother about the wedding, but she did not have good news for her son. His mother then told her son that either he would marry Amanda, from next door, or no one else. And then she asked him what was more important to him: his career or love? His mother dreamed and saw her son become a successful man.
Amanda was from a wealthy family, and besides, she had long had a crush on Mark, and he was tangled up with this Melissa, who was of no lineage or tribe. And Melissa’s mother had a bad reputation… What would people say?
“I don’t need another daughter-in-law, and you do what you want!” – said the mother to her son.
Mark persuaded his parent for a long time, but she was adamant, and then she said that if he married Melissa, she would curse them. Mark chickened out then. He and Melissa dated for six months, and so their relationship slowly fizzled out.
Eventually he married Amanda. The girl was really in love with him, but they decided not to have a wedding. Mark did not want Melissa to see at least somewhere his wedding photos. That’s how they began to live. What can I say? Amanda was from a wealthy background, and so Mark moved into their huge house. His parents helped him climb the career ladder. But he never got to be happy.
Mark didn’t want children. When Amanda realized she couldn’t talk him into having a child, she filed for divorce herself. When this happened Mark was well into his forties, and his wife Amanda – thirty-eight. She later had a baby and became truly happy.
Mark dreamed of marrying Melissa, he tried to find her, but it didn’t work out. It was as if Melissa had disappeared. And then he found out that she was gone. An acquaintance told him that after their separation she had married the first man she met and he turned out to be a scoundrel.
After that, Mark began to live in his parents’ old apartment and drink himself to death. He kept looking at Melissa’s picture, and he could never forgive his mother.
