I don’t understand why I became his wife

We got married not too long ago. My husband loves me madly. And there would be no doubt about it, if it were not for his actions before the wedding. And it’s not even about cheating. It’s much more serious, you might say strange.

I think it was because I cared too much. I worshipped him too much, loved him too much and forgave him everything. Of course, he got used to this attitude, became more confident and his self-esteem increased. He probably imagined that at the snap of a finger anyone would crawl on her knees in front of him. Though he is hardly in high demand among the others… Someone else would not tolerate his transgressions and blindly trust him.

It wasn’t long before the wedding that he wanted to be alone, to go on vacation and prepare for married life. It couldn’t be helped, so I put up with that too and let him go on a trip.

As he told me later, he decided to get away from civilization and be where there was no Internet and no phone. He went alone into the mountains to admire nature. I was left alone, pining with all my heart. I waited for his return every minute and missed him madly.

A week later he came back. It was the happiest day of my life. I greeted him with all the warmth and affection I could muster. I cooked him the tastiest culinary creations.

The next day something strange began to happen. He began to run out into the entryway very often, although he was a non-smoker himself. But then he started leaving the house several times a day under different excuses. One day I went out to the store and found a letter in the mailbox. It looked like an ordinary paper letter. It was addressed to me from him and sent while he was away. But what was written in it shocked me deeply. He wrote the following:

“Hello. I don’t want to deceive you anymore. You are not the right person for me. And I do not want to spend the rest of my life with you. There won’t be a wedding. Forgive me, don’t look for me, and don’t call me. I won’t come back to you.”

So short, succinct, and brutal…

Only now it dawned on me that he’d been running to check the mailbox the whole time. I silently destroyed the letter without saying a word to him, without giving him the impression that anything had happened. But how can I live with a man who has no desire to be there for me? Why did he get married and pretend everything was fine?
