I certainly don’t separate grandchildren from my daughter and grandchildren from my son. But when I hug my son’s children, my heart sinks. Others don’t evoke any emotion.

I am a mother of two children. They are old enough, I have grandchildren. My relationship with my daughter-in-law is great, and I don’t fight with my son-in-law.

I want to say right away that I have a stronger bond with my daughter-in-law and son. Christine can comfort me, cheer me up, and help me when I need it. She is very young, but very wise. Sometimes I am amazed at her myself.

But when my daughter was about to get married, I couldn’t find a place for myself. I was against my son-in-law, that’s all. I tried to talk her down, then scolded her, but nothing worked. My daughter kept repeating that she loved Yerzhan and could not live without him. My son-in-law is Kazakh. Can you imagine my face when I saw him for the first time? And a man of another faith. For me it was unacceptable. It is shameful.

He is not a bad man, kind and understanding. He loves my daughter very much, but I can’t accept him. We do not quarrel with him, we communicate normally, but for me he is a stranger.

But that is not the biggest problem. My attitude towards my son-in-law is reflected in my grandchildren. I have no love for them. Of course, I don’t separate my grandchildren from my daughter and my grandchildren from my son. I give them the same gifts, I take them to my house on weekends, I take them on visits. But when I hug my son’s children, my heart sinks. The others don’t evoke any emotion.

I kiss them, pamper them, hug them too, but to me they are like the neighborhood kids who came to visit. I know it’s wrong, but I can’t help it. I have no idea how to love them at all.
