Good afternoon, dear readers. I want to share my story with you. I am forty-three, I have a little sister who lives in the next town. The sibling is divorced and spends almost all her summers with her children at our place. I have never refused shelter to my little sister, because she is my own, but after she refused my daughter’s help because she had a man, I also stopped communicating with her.
My daughter went to school in the same town my little sister lived in. I didn’t bother asking my sister to let her stay with me, because I didn’t want to embarrass her, since she and her two children lived in a two-bedroom apartment. Sis never once invited her niece over for tea, but I chalked it up to her being too busy at work. At the end of December, my daughter passed all her credits except one. She had bought tickets for the evening train because she had planned to take the last credit, but then something happened that completely disrupted her plans.
The instructor was late for the credit, and then started taking the credit according to the list. With only two hours to go, there was no way her daughter was going to turn in her bed sheets. When she had an hour before she had to leave, she took a bus to the train station, but got caught in a traffic jam. Of course her daughter got to the train station, but only her train had already left. At this very moment my daughter’s phone died.
Daughter was able to call me only after eleven pm, she cried and said that she could not leave, because she missed the train and tickets she can buy only the next morning, in addition, she did not have time to get to the hostel, and the money she has not a penny, and therefore she can not even tomorrow morning to buy tickets to get home. I tried to calm my daughter down and asked her to wait a few minutes, and then I called my little sister:
-Hi! Sorry to bother you, but would you mind taking my daughter to your place, as she missed her train and the dorm is already closed and she has no place to sleep tonight.
– Hi, there’s no way I can help you today. My boyfriend is supposed to be here any minute, I gave my kids to a friend. Not tonight, I’m sorry…
– What do you mean you’re sorry? You misunderstand me, my daughter, your niece, is at the station and has nowhere to sleep, and you’re talking about some man. I never said no to you when you came to stay with the kids all summer long!
– Tonight you can’t, this man and I have been together for years, I promised him I would spend the night with him. It’s your daughter, so you take care of your own problems.
I hung up, called my daughter, and told her I was on my way to pick her up. Of course, I could have dropped money for her to get a hotel room, but I couldn’t let my child be alone in a strange city.
I found my daughter all in tears, I fed her at a coffee shop, and then we drove home with her. My sister never called me after that, but I was so surprised when she called me a week ago to tell me she was coming to visit me tomorrow. However, I wouldn’t talk to her and told her my house was closed to her and her children forever!
I still don’t understand how my sister could put a night with a man above the needs of her niece. She essentially abandoned my daughter in a difficult and life-threatening situation, and now wants me to let her live with me all summer. My advice to you would be to always treat people the way you would want them to treat you!
