– Hello, daughter, come over, please, I fell down. Help me.

I’m sitting at work one day, bored. I’m not a slacker, it’s just that on that day our program was broken and we couldn’t do anything without it, we were just waiting for the IT guys and dumbfounded. And then I get a call. I pick up the phone and hear:
– Hello, daughter, please come over, I’m down. Help me.

I’m in a stupor. The voice was unfamiliar, the feeling was that the person was elderly and really needed help. I decided not to hang up, and to find out more information.

– What’s wrong, how can I help? What is your address?

At first the woman was also confused, apparently realizing that she was in the wrong place, but out of despair, she still gave me the address. It was very close to my work. I asked her what happened. She was dusting off a cabinet, a stool had broken, and Grandma had fallen, seriously injuring her leg.

I warned the chief that I would bounce back for a while and rushed to help. On the way, I dialed the ambulance number and called the right address. I arrived at the location; the door was unlocked. As I entered the apartment, I saw the very same woman. She was lying on her elbows, her leg was clearly dislocated at the knee. I, as a person far from medicine, thought only to make a cold compress.

My grandmother was in great pain, moaning, tears streaming from her eyes. My heart clenched, I hugged her and, as best I could, calmed her down until the doctors arrived. While they were taking care of her, I got through to the old lady’s daughter and told her which hospital they were taking her mother to. I said I would lock the apartment and throw the keys in the mailbox.

Back at work, I kept wondering how she was doing. The next day I visited her in the hospital. Everything was fine, she thanked me and invited me to visit. Soon she was discharged. I sometimes go to visit her for tea. We became friends with her daughter and they are some of the most wonderful people I know.

I often wonder what would have happened if I had hung up then? I never would have known. I’d like to believe that, God forbid, of course, but my parents would have been helped by someone like that someday, too.
