All my life I’ve been a shadow of my sister

I am a wealthy man, who achieved his success on his own. I have been happily married for ten years, my wife and I are raising two children.

I remember my childhood in gloomy colors, because I was not a favorite child. My mother and father married very young, because I was supposed to come along, but the marriage fell apart, for they were too young and foolish. A few years later, in the second marriage, already by the man I loved, my mother had my sister Rebecca. The whole family dissolved into this beautiful blond angel, forgetting all about me. My sister was a masterful manipulator and an extremely selfish child. Her parents allowed her absolutely everything, as long as she did not cry. How bitter I felt when they bought her beautiful expensive dolls, while I had one broken toy car for the whole childhood, because there was no money left for me.

For Rebecca, everything was the best and most precious. They took her to different circles, visited theaters and circuses with her, and amusement parks provided her with all kinds of entertainment. She was admired, admired her beauty. At the same time, I was left to myself. I looked for entertainment in what was available to me. At school there were free classes in burning techniques, and I also spent many hours in the library. Higher education was not intended for me, for my mother thought I should work to support myself, as a lot of money goes to Rebecca’s education. I worked during the day and went to university at night.

I was tired of being Rebecca’s shadow in our family, and there was essentially nothing keeping me here anymore, so after I finished my studies I left town and gradually managed to get back on my feet. I called home regularly, my parents never called me, but every time Rebecca was the topic of conversation.

I knew that she had gone to university, of course for tuition, because my mother’s laziness would not let her do otherwise. All her efforts were aimed at getting into the circle of “golden youth,” and that required money. She had to meet the requirements of this society, not only externally, but also lead an appropriate way of life. It was mandatory to vacation abroad twice a year, one of which at ski resorts. Appropriate equipment was very expensive, so parents spent everything on it, not only their salary, but also took out consumer loans.

Her parents, still blinded by their love for their daughter, indulged her in everything. Hearing about what was going on in this family was unbearable, so I began to cut down on the time we talked. Gradually our communication dried up.

I met my girlfriend when I was registering another business. She turned out to be a big smart girl, and when we got married, we created a business together. We ended up with a beautiful friendly family and a reliable trustworthy partnership.

One day my father called and said that my mother wasn’t feeling well. I just had the opportunity, so I decided to go to my hometown. Here was our street, and here was the roof of our house. Suddenly the memories of the loneliness, dislike, and rejection that had accompanied me all my life in that house came over me with a sharp pain. Would I be able not to show this pain and show the joy of seeing my family? As I parked the car in front of the house and pushed the gate open, my mother appeared on the porch. Before I could even be surprised that she was already on her feet, I heard: “Oh, you’re here at last, at least I’ll say to your face what I think of you. How could you forget your own sister, not remember how much money a girl needs for the decent life she deserves?”

I realized that Rebecca continued to live with them, she never got married, no decent rich husband was in sight, so her parents continued to support her, and the money I sent them went to her little girl, of course. Yes, that’s the trick. I did not enter the house, dryly wished everyone good luck, and went back to the car.
