Dasha was brought to BARCS with a severe eye infection that had gone untreated for some time. The kitten’s eyes were so swollen and ulcerated that they had to be surgically removed, leaving her permanently blind.

Despite the fact that she would need around-the-clock care, volunteers at BARCS knew Dasha deserved a chance and took her into their own homes until she found a new one.

That home turned out to be Karli Houghland of Maryland who said “I just fell in love with her face,” after seeing photos of Dasha on social media.

“Both my husband and I work full time, but we decided it wouldn’t be fair not to have an animal in our lives since we both grew up with them,” added Houghland about taking on the additional responsibility of caring for a blind cat.

BARCS is incredibly grateful to Karli Houghland for opening her heart and home (and spending sleepless nights worrying about whether or not Dasha was scratching furniture) to this special needs kitty – proving again that there really is no such thing as ‘unadoptable’ when it comes to animals.”

When Dasha arrived at BARCS, she was not only dealing with the physical injuries from being thrown into a door, but also emotional scars from her previous home.

Dasha has found new life and love since arriving at BARCS. She now enjoys spending time in the sunroom playing with toys and interacting with staff and volunteers.

The Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS) is excited to announce the arrival of four new furry friends who all have disabilities or special needs.
