Hamel took the kitten to a veterinarian and found out that she had been shot in both of her front legs. One arm was shattered and required amputation, while the other leg sustained only minor damage. The veterinary bills cost $1,500—an amount which the children’s parents were unwilling to pay.

Hamle decided to take on full financial responsibility for the kitten’s care, including her future medical needs as she grows up. She named her Lucky because “she truly is one.”
Cupcake was originally brought in to the veterinarian with a wound on her back, which was likely caused by a car. Hamel shared that she also had an infection in her left eye and couldn’t see out of it. After taking Cupcake to the vet and getting her some proper medical attention, Hamel decided that she would foster Cupcake until she found a permanent home.

The veterinarian concluded that Cupcake’s fractures were deliberately induced by Hamel, who then put casts on her legs to make it look like she had been injured in an accident. This was done as a way to deceive others into thinking she needed help, when really all Hamel wanted was for someone to take the dog off of his hands.
Hamel has since been charged with felony animal abuse and is awaiting trial. If convicted, he could face up to four years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

“She is a remarkable cat and has won the hearts of everyone here,” Hamel said.
